It’s time to register for kindergarten

On January 11, Lake Shore Public Schools began registering kindergartners for the 2010-11 school year. Early registration allows schools to plan better for your child’s school experience. Parents are urged to register children born on or before December 1, 2005.

Lake Shore proudly invites Macomb County residents to register their kindergartners through the Schools of Choice program. If you have a friend who lives in Macomb County and would like to enroll their children in Lake Shore, please have them contact us at 285-8462.

To register, please bring the following documentation to your local school office during regular business hours:
• Child’s birth certificate
• Child’s record of immunization
• Child’s record of hearing and vision screening
• Parent’s proof of residency – three proofs required*

Our schools:
Masonic Heights School, 22100 Masonic. Phone: 285-8500
Rodgers School, 21601 L’Anse. Phone: 285-8600
Violet School, 22020 Violet. Phone: 285-8700

*Proof of residency may include a home purchase agreement, lease contract, current utility bill, doctor/dentist bill, or credit card statement bearing the parent’s name and address. If none is available, affidavits to verify address can be obtained at the school. A driver’s license is not valid proof of residency. If you are unable to register in person, or need more information, please call your school.

Bond projects progressing on schedule
Lake Shore voters are seeing their tax dollars at work, as the district has recently completed a major portion of its bond projects. In August of 2008, Lake Shore voters approved a three-year extension to the district’s bond issue from 1997. The bond extension has generated $9.7 million in proceeds, which are being used to complete several construction projects and security upgrades around the district. The main projects are the addition of a gym and a new secure student entrance to Lake Shore High School, and a gym and cafeteria to Masonic Heights Elementary. The bonds have also funded the reconstruction of the entrances and offices of Kennedy Middle School and Masonic Heights Elementary. Other projects include technology upgrades, new playground equipment, and new fencing.

The Masonic Heights and Kennedy projects were recently completed, while the high school gym construction is currently underway, with estimated completion sometime next fall. Along with a new gym, the high school will receive a new, more secure student entrance. The new entrance will include a security desk, ensuring that only authorized individuals enter the building.
“The reconstructed entrances at Kennedy, Masonic and the high school are all part of the district’s security plan. We are reconstructing those entrances to make them more secure for our students and staff,” said Donald Kling, Director of Facilities and Transportation.

In terms of technology, the bond extension has funded the installation of Audio-Visual Enhancement Systems in all K-12 district buildings.

In addition to the revenues generated by the bond extension, Lake Shore Public Schools contributed funds from its savings for additional projects. The main one of those is the installation of new synthetic turf at the Lake Shore High School Athletic Field, which was completed in September. The other projects include upgrades to the energy-management systems, and in 2010 parking-lot renovations at Rodgers Elementary to address safety concerns.

“In every project that we do, the goal is always the same: Doing what’s best for our students,” said Mr. Kling. “The reconstructed entrances will increase security in the buildings, and the new field is much safer for our athletes. Also, the additional gyms and upgraded technology will enhance students’ learning experience. We are excited for our students because they are learning in an environment suited for the 21st century.”
