Referral Process
Customers are referred to Work First through Michigan Works!  Case managers may also assign customers to this component if they have completed a Michigan Works! training program or are receiving a  FIP grant and are currently employed.

Work First offers the following services:

  • Solutions to solving the personal barriers that are holding you back from a great job
  • Goal setting and how to get there
  • Decision making and coping mechanisms
  • Job satisfaction, getting what you want from working
  • Budgeting tips
  • Time management and prioritizing skills
  • Powerful resumes
  • How to put resumes on the Michigan Talent Bank (Internet) and find potential employers
  • Retaining a job and conflict management
  • Interviewing, cover letters, and thank you letters
  • Schooling and training options and explorations
  • Options available for financial aid for schooling
  • Crisis intervention for removal of employment related barriers
  • Transportation assistance
  • Vehicle repair assistance

Assessment
Customers identify barriers, assess employment skills, explore career/training options, identify goals, assess reading and math skills, complete a Michigan Talent Bank application, and discuss human relations and conflict resolution.

Community Resource Liaison
Referrals and support services for barrier resolution such as Turning Point, Community Assessment and Referral Education (C.A.R.E.), shelters, Family and Youth Services, Children's Trust Fund, local library activities, workshops, and support groups.

Job Readiness
Customers learn how to resolve personal barriers, resolve conflict, decision-making skills, balancing home and work, delegating responsibility - team efforts, coping mechanisms, stress management, goal setting and focused activities that will lead to goal achievement.

Job Search Tools
Customers learn interviewing techniques, how to properly complete applications, job satisfaction, retention, create a professional resume, and compose cover and thank you letters.  The customer also has the opportunity to learn hands-on computer applications of the Talent Bank.

Job Club
Customers are given the opportunity to actively seek out employment.  Classified and Talent Bank listings are available.  Customers learn how to identify and follow through with job leads, schedule interviews, search for employers on Michigan's Talent Bank, compose letters, and follow up with past applications.  On-the-job training options are explored in joint efforts with Michigan Works job development.

Job Retention
Our retention specialist works with customers to help them retain their new job and find solutions to problems such as:  day care, transportation, handling constructive criticism, job satisfaction, advancement, further training options, attendance, work ethics, motivation, scheduling conflicts, and balancing obligations.
